 Mason Creek Middle School 2015-2016

Teacher of The Year

Mrs. Kim Scasny

Kim Scasny has been teaching math and science in Douglas County for 12 years.  She began teaching at Mirror Lake Elementary, and has taught middle school math and science at Turner Middle School and Brighten Academy, and is currently the Gifted Earth Science teacher at Mason Creek Middle School. Mrs. Scasny previously served in the United States Air Force as a weather officer, a research meteorologist with the Naval Research Laboratory, and as a climatologist with the National Weather Service before obtaining her teacher’s certification in science and math.  It was the advent of becoming a mom to two amazing children that prompted Mrs. Scasny to become an educator.  The perspective as a parent of children in the school system and as an educator gives her the desire to reach not only the students she teaches, but also to collaborate with students’ parents in the educational process.

Mrs. Scasny earned her Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, her Masters of Science in Meteorology at University of Oklahoma, and her teacher’s certification at the University of West Georgia.  Mrs. Scasny’s gifted endorsement allows her to meet the needs of exceptional children in Douglas County.  She is part of school leadership as the 6th grade department chair,  sponsors the 4-H program, JR BETA club and the Gravity Games Racing Team at Mason Creek Middle School.

Mrs. Scasny has been married to her husband, Kevin for twenty-four years.  Together, they have two wonderful children, Michael, 20 years, and Anna, 18 years.  Both children attend Mississippi State University and the family mottos are “Hail State” and “More Cowbell!”  When not teaching, Mrs. Scasny enjoys, cooking, reading, relaxing at the beach, and gardening in her expansive yard.
